Magnet Magazine: There are plenty of musicians today who are influenced by your work. How often do you get asked to produce bands?
MM: 現在、XTCに影響を受けたミュージシャンが掃いて捨てるほどいますが、しょっちゅうバンドをプロデュースを頼まれたりしているんですか？
Andy PartridgeL I got asked regularly to produce people, but I said no to everybody; after a while, peoplejust stopped asking. I got sick of the social-worker aspect of it.I found it had very little to do with music and more to do with beinga nanny and making sure the alcoholic guitarist gets to the studioon time, doesn’t fight too much with the singer, who can’t standthe bass player. In the meantime, there’s no music being made. I also think it’s kind of odd that everyone wants to sound like 1979 again.（中略）I’m not interested in that; I’ve been through that station onthe trip already.
AP:以前は、結構常に他のアーチストのプロデュ―スを頼まれたりしていました。でも、みんな断ってたんです。そんな風に断ってばかりいたので、だんだん誰も頼みに来なくなりましたね。
何が嫌かって？ソーシャルワーカー的なことをしなくちゃいけないことにうんざりして。音楽とはまったく関係のない事をしなくちゃいけないんですよ。
乳母役になって、アル中のギターリストが、ちゃんと予定の時間にスタジオ入りするように配慮したり、そいつが、リードシンガーとあまりケンカをしないように仲裁役になってあげるとか。
それで、そのリードシンガーのそいつはそいつでベーシストが嫌いとか、もういろいろあって。そういう余計な事に時間を費やしているばかりじゃ肝心の音楽の制作などまったく捗らないですよ。
あと、ちょっと奇妙に感じるのは、誰もが再び1979年の音を作ろうとしていて。（中略）僕は、全くあの時代の音楽には、今現在、興味がないんです。列車に例えると、既に自分はその駅を通過しているんです。
I long for young kids to come up withstuff that’s really going to upset me. But nobody does. They alljust want a little piece of the corporate cake. I want a band who’llmake their own instruments out of cardboard, then play four-hoursongs about urinating. Is it too much to ask for something new, forgod’s sake? Take up instruments you don’t hear anymore. Let’s hear four kids playing xylophones through fuzzboxes. It really frustrates me and gets me to the point where I can’t talk about it anymore without my brain knotting up in anger.
自分が切望するのは、若いバンドが、僕を心から動転させ、うろたえさせるような音楽を作ってくれることです。でも、そんなバンドは皆無です。彼らは一人残らず大企業が分けてくれるたやすい富と名声を求めてるだけ。
僕が見たいのは、段ボールで自分たちの楽器を作り、ションベンをすることについての歌を４時間延々と演奏するような奴らですよ。
頼むから、何でもいいから今までやらなかったような新しいことをやってくれよ。そう願うのはそんなに無理な注文ですかね、全く！！
例えば、誰も今は使ってもいないような楽器を使ってみるとかさ。ファズボックスを使って全員でシロフォンを演奏する四人組のバンドなんてものを聴いてみたいものです。
今の若いバンドの状況は本当に苛立ちますね、この事について話すと腹が立って興奮せずにはいられないんです。
